The Meaning Behind Libertas
Libertas is Latin for liberty or freedom—a principle encompassing thought, conscience, expression, belief, personal responsibility, and informed choices about our lives.
For founder Nancy Mercier, freedom has guided more than three decades of lived experience, advocacy, and public service, including navigating severe spinal cord injury and championing independence, patient-centred healthcare, dignity, and individual rights.
Libertas Publishing Canada carries that philosophy into books exploring societal freedoms and the courage, knowledge, and resilience needed to navigate what we cannot control.

For much of my life, writing has helped me understand the world, advocate for change, and make sense of unexpected challenges. What began as political research and commentary evolved into something more personal when serious illness entered our family, and writing became a way to navigate fear, uncertainty, and the possibility of loss.
I founded Libertas Publishing Canada to bring these different areas of my life together under one independent publishing imprint. Whether exploring freedom, healthcare, or personal experiences, my purpose remains the same: to share knowledge, encourage understanding, and leave a meaningful legacy.
I believe even life's most difficult experiences can offer valuable lessons, connection, and purpose. If my books help someone feel less alone, make an informed decision, or find the courage to face an unexpected challenge, then the work will have been worthwhile.
